About Model D

Model D is a web-based magazine creating new narratives for Detroit since 2005. We tell stories of development, re-development, creative people and businesses, vibrant neighborhoods and cool places to live, work and play.

The Model D Team:

Walter Wasacz, Managing Editor

Walter has been a writer, editor and virtual handyman for Issue Media Group since 2005, when the publishing group launched Model D. He is a staff writer for XLR8R in San Francisco and has published stories and photos in Berlin's De:Bug and Under the Influence in Paris. Walter is a member of the Situationist-inspired audio-visual electronics group nospectacle, which has performed at Detroit's Movement Festival and at Mutek in Montreal. For all story pitches and everything to do with editorial contact Walter here.
Jon Zemke, News Editor

Jon is a freelance writer who lives and works in Detroit. He went to the University of Michigan, has written about politics on Capitol Hill, chased crime stories in the boonies and big city and is now a business reporter in Detroit. In his spare time he renovates houses, rubs the bellies of his dogs and travels with his wife.

Mike Galbraith, News Editor

If the name sounds familiar you might recognize it from his byline in our sister Urban Innovation Exchange publication, where he has penned profiles on Rachel LutzRitchie Harrison and Joel Peterson, among others. Galbraith has also contributed stories to the University Research Corridor, Workforce Intelligence Network, and Mode Shift. He's a 2005 graduate of Central Michigan University, where he received a BS in English (concentrating on creative writing and fiction). Galbraith is also a singer-songwriter who has performed in area coffee houses, pubs and music venues, including the Lager House and the Old Miami. If you have a development news tip for Galbraith, drop him a line here.
Marvin Shaouni, Managing Photographer
Based in Detroit and serving both editorial and commercial clients, Marvin's aim is to seize culture through the photography of people, food and the everyday. Since 2008, he has explored his hometown of Detroit for Model D. Marvin particularly enjoys the challenge of finding new ways to show Detroit, with the hope that his photographs will help readers to rethink how we can all live and interact with our city and neighborhoods. Find more of his cool stuff here.

In October 2011, Model D celebrated 300 issues. Thanks to Tom Hendrickson for this video that was shown at our event, The Next Big Thing. While we're at it, let's look at some more video capturing the energy of the celebration itself.
