The
Detroit Yacht Club has released
the findings of its recently-completed master planning process.
Architects GunnLevine have made a series recommendations after a
one-year detailed study of the structure, which was built in 1923.
These recommendations include:
- Installation of air conditioning;
- Renovation
of the first floor, which will create improved traffic patterns and
"more space for membership and casual activities," describes Rear
Commodore Paul Kreitsch, who chaired the Master Plan Oversight
Committee;
- Creation of 8 overnight suites on the third floor for members and guests to augment the popular Garwood Suite;
- Addition of a fitness center over the existing ladies locker room;
- Various mechanical upgrades;
- Expansion of the pool area including a new tiki bar; and
- Improvement of handicap accessibility throughout the club.
Although
the $100,000 planning process was funded by contributions from members
and friends of the club, Kreitsch explains that a committee has been
created to explore other methods of financing the work, which the
architects estimate to cost $18 million. "This is a long range plan; it
might take 20 years," he says.
