New, walkable urban shopping plaza nears completion in Hamtramck

Tenants will begin moving into Main Street Plaza, located at Caniff and Gallagher, within the next month. The 6,000-square foot shopping plaza has six distinct spaces.

What makes the shopping center such an important development for the city is that it is new construction that is built right up to the lot line. "This builds upon historic land use patterns in city of Hamtramck," says Erik Tungate, the city's community and economic development director.

There are 16 parking spaces located behind the building. Hamtramck does not have minimum parking requirements for new commercial developments, which encourages such design -- along with walkability. Tungate says this is the key to Hamtramck's revitalization. "This is a long-term sustainabiblity model that other cities need to emulate."
