The
Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit's new cafe, which opens this week, is aiming to offer an intimate food and beverage experience inside the cavernous warehouse space. "It's a minimal-looking object in the center gallery of the museum," says Lauren Rossi, a spokesperson for MOCAD. "It's a small and
unobtrusive space itself, and surrounding it are tables and chairs and magazines
and books, things for people to look through."
The cafe offers two soups, four salads and seven sandwiches daily, as well as assorted baked goods and pastries. There is Italian espresso and fair-trade coffee, juices and Faygo soda. "All the food is being prepared at
Cafe Muse in Roayl Oak," says Rossi. "The entire cafe has a really strong emphasis on organic things."
Rossi hopes that, because admission to the museum is free, visitors will pop into the cafe for a cup of coffee, to study or host a meeting -- thus increasing the likelihood that the guest will spend some time with the art on display.
The cafe seats 45, has wireless internet and daily delivery of the
Detroit Free Press,
Detroit News and
New York Times. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m Wednesday through Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Full service begins on Dec. 19.
