Slow's expands with new patio seating in Corktown

Slow's Bar-BQ has added an outdoor patio with an outdoor DJ booth at the Corktown restaurant.

The enclosed dining area is surrounded by a three-sided, thick pine wall made of angular lines that keep the sounds and distractions of Michigan Avenue at bay, while still providing lots of sunlight, evening air, and a view of the art on the wall outside the building. The wall includes a commanding art piece of geometrically placed funnels and painted stages of the moon by artist Samantha Randall that functions as a lunar calendar of important dates in the history of Detroit. The landscaped area includes trees and built-in wooden benches, concrete tables on casters and other modern finishes.

Slows’ proprietor Phil Cooley built and designed the patio with help from his design collaborative, Los Pistoleros. Cooley says the patio continues as an extension of his desire to create a subdued atmosphere that’s good for conversation and slowing down with a good meal.

Special guest DJs are planned for weekends, and Cooley will even spin some nights. Slow's Bar-BQ’s kitchen closes at 11 p.m., 10 p.m. on Mondays, with the bar open till 2 a.m.
