Studio 601 brings mixed-media gallery, entertainment venue downtown

"I've got a sandbox and it's open to whoever wants to play in it," says Studio 601 proprietor Ed Gardiner.

The multi-media venue set up shop in the heart of downtown Detroit last year, with regularly occurring events like monthly comedy nights, vaudeville shows and art openings, plus a bi-weekly DJ showcase and weekly film nights.

Gardiner is circumspect about his Congress and Washington Blvd. location, which tends to be quiet in the hours between office workdays and late night club events. "Between 6 and 11 p.m., there's not much going on in this neighborhood -- even bars don't open unless there's something going on at Cobo," he says. "We're trying to change that."

Gardiner is exploring teaming up with other downtown art spaces to implement downtown gallery crawls.

Studio 601 events are publicized via myspace, a weekly ad in the Metro Times and an email list that can be joined by sending a message to studio601@gmail.com.
