Construction
on the Mexicantown International Welcome Center and Mercado project in
Mexicantown is nearing completion with 75 percent of the project
roughly finished. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the $17 million
project is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 20, with Gov. Granholm scheduled
to attend.
Located at the base of the Ambassador Bridge on the
corner of Bagley and 20th Street, the combined center is expected to
become a major tourist site and retail area for Detroit and the
Southwest side. Work continues on the public plaza and the finishing of
the center’s exterior stone walls. Anzaldua/ Garrison, A Joint Venture,
are the contractors on the project. Construction began October 2003.
The
Mexicantown CDC is currently marketing the retail and office spaces and is ready to begin signing tenants.
