D-Biz: Highland Park company salvages, reuses historic brick

One Highland Park company is making something from the torrent of building demolitions in Detroit. Historic Brick Co., located at 15120 Third St., salvages historic bricks from demolition sites and makes them available for new construction or rehab projects.

Owner Dwight Fowler says his business serves a dual purpose: it keeps discarded materials out of dumpsters and and helps find them another market. Businesses and homeowners that use his reused bricks immediately see a benefit, he says. "It gives a building -- a business or a home -- instant character, it gives it that vintage look."

Fowler is weathering the lull in construction projects by working with organizations that may have grants for environmentally-sustainable projects and planning for the future. "If I had the resources...I have other ideas for discarded masonry products," he says.

Historic Brick Co. bricks can be found in Detroit casinos and will be used in the Green Garage in Midtown -- which, incidentally, is how Model D discovered the business.
