DPD HQ to relocate to MGM temporary casino

The temporary location of MGM Casino at Third and Abbott will become Detroit's Public Safety Headquarters. The 400,000-square-foot building will house the Detroit Police Department, Detroit Fire Department and a new crime lab. The release said the development "represents the city's on-going efforts to consolidate operations to increase efficiency."

The city is purchasing the property on a $6.32 million land contract. It is expected to be fully occupied by the Fall of 2012 with earlier department phase-ins possible.

"I am glad to finally be able to move our officers into a safe, sound and functional structure that is also citizen friendly and accessible," Mayor Dave Bing said in the statement. "This represents an important step in making our city more operationally efficient...and safe."
