Just what Detroit needs: Another -- ahem -- Bar

On the bar-laden yet desolate Henry St. just north of Downtown proper, the 2500 Club has been reborn as Another F-cking Bar & Grill -- itself a resurrection of the original AFB on Woodward near 7 Mile, an institution that closed its doors in the mid-1990's. "I always wanted to open up more than one," says George Mugianis, who runs the the pub (it's owned by his father, Christ Mugianis, and Dave LaMarche). He describes the bar as "old school and comfortable" that caters to a "nice mix of people."

A Detroit lifer, Mugianis is clearly devoted to Detroit and hopes that AFB appeals to neighborhood residents and visitors alike. "When you're tired of lawns and malls, you have to come Downtown," he says. "But if you prefer life without the theater, sporting events, museums, all the things that a city have to offer...well then, there really isn't any reason."

New windows lend to AFB's welcoming attitude that is punctuated with a sharp sense of humor (beer taps housed in a wall of urinals, a peephole into the men's room from the lady's room) and an appreciation for Detroit history (Coleman A. Young M.F.I.C. painting). Its "Little Ass Menu" is fresh and affordable, with $6 burgers and "Mr. Potato Balls" -- think tater tots for grown-ups -- standing out as a couple of stalwarts. Food is served in dog bowls for yet one more touch of sarcasm. Mugianis plans to expand the menu over time, eventually opening for lunch.

AFB is open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week, with earlier Sunday hours for Lions home games. It is located at 2500 Park Ave. at Henry. Call 313-285-8362.
