Capitol Park improvements to begin now that Rosa Parks Terminal operational

The temporary use of Capitol Park as downtown's bus terminal has ceased with the opening of the Rosa Park Terminal -- which is good news for the tiny urban park surrounded by a remarkably intact collection of historic buildings.

The design for park improvements are being finalized, says Detroit Economic Growth Corporation project manager Malik Goodwin, and include improved sidewalks, landscaping and the relocation of the statue and remains of Gov. Stevens T. Mason to a more prominent spot.

"(The plan is to) refresh the park's look, make it more inviting, more aesthetically pleasing," says Goodwin. "This ties into our larger plans for reviving the Capitol Park district." On that note, DEGC has been meeting with property owners, and the Detroit Downtown Development Authority has been given the OK to purchase property in the area.

Goodwin hopes to see work begin at Capitol Park in August. The park improvements are being designed by Detroit-based Merz & Associates.
