Hamtramck's Design 99 relocates to Caniff

Design 99 has relocated -- but no worries, they've stayed put within the borders of Hamtramck. Their new space is located on Caniff near Gallagher, a growing retail node within the city. Owners Gina Reichert and Mitch Cope initially were looking to stay on Jos. Campau, which is typically regarded as the town's main shopping drag; however, they've found their new location suprisingly trafficked.

New neighbors include the recently reopened Bozek's Market, Dudek Foods, an expanded al-Haramain Market and a new retail plaza whose tenants include Royal Kabob and a salon. "The corner of Caniff and Gallagher  is so different than it was just a year ago," says Reichert.

Design 99's smaller space will enable the couple to focus more on art and design and less on stocking shelves. "The scale of the space is better for us -- we're not your basic retail store trying to move merchandise," says Reichert. "We're happy with a smaller space, so we can focus on people and what they're doing, artists and what they're making. It suits us better."

Design 99 is open from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. It is located at 3309 Caniff. Call 313-676-6941.
