The
Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has awarded $115,000 to
Jefferson East Business Association and
The Villages Community Development Corp. The funds will be used to develop a retail enhancement strategy for Jefferson Ave. from E. Grand Blvd. to the city limits.
Neighborhoods affected will include: Creekside, the Berry Subdivision, the Gold Coast riverfront community, Indian Village and West Village. Its landmarks include Belle Isle, Waterworks Park, Pewabic Pottery and Gabriel Richard Park, the eastern terminus of the Detroit RiverWalk.
Specifically, the Community Foundation funds will be used to hire a full-time staff person who will survey existing business owners and work to help develop a strategy for future retail growth. The staffer will also begin to work with the
Downtown Detroit Partnership to develop a strategy for the entire Jefferson corridor, all the way to downtown. The thought is to link into an effort to
attract retail to the East Riverfront area.
