Hamtramck expands its community and economic development office with new hire

The City of Hamtramck has a new hand on deck in its economic development efforts: Susie Stec has come aboard as community and economic development coordinator. She started in April and, so far, has primarily assisted residents and business owners with zoning issues, "giving them the skinny on what they can and can not do," as she puts it. Stec also is charged with managing community development block grants and will take on grant writing.

Stec grew up in Brighton, and attended McGill University in Montreal for undergraduate studies and Wayne State University for her master's degree. Before taking the position in Hamtramck, she worked for Eight Mile Boulevard Assoc.

The position is already to Stec's liking. "So far, it's lived up to every single reason I got into urban planning in the first place," she says.
"Hamtramck's got all the things I love about being in a city: it's creative, there is an insane amount of diversity. ... I like being in that urban atmosphere."

Stec will be working closely with Jason Friedmann, Hamtramck's community and economic development director.
