People Mover getting $1.5M in upgrades; to close for a month

After 21 years of operation, the Detroit People Mover is in need of a little TLC. It will close for four weeks, from Sunday, July 20, to Monday, August 18, to replace 1,800 feet of track along six of the track's sharpest turns.

The construction team too what could have been a three-month process and streamlined it into a one month project, according to the Detroit Transportation Corp. That team consists of Parsons Brinckerhoff, the track's original designer, Advanced Geomatics, the surveyor, and Delta Railroad Construction.

The summer season was selected for closure because of the relatively light schedule of events downtown during that timeframe. Plus, the nice weather is conducive to walking.

There are a couple of other options. DPM has partnered with Checker Cab so that patrons can call 313-963-7000 from any station and a cab will be dispatched in minutes. Also, any in-bound DDOT bus travel within the Central Business District will cost only $.50, the same fare as the DPM, during construction.
