Vegan restaurant, Raw Cafe, will open late August on Majestic block

Is it appropriate to call the health-conscious renaissance in Midtown official? There's Avalon International Breads, of course, along with Goodwells Natural Foods, Kim's Produce and Detroit Community Acupuncture -- all within just a few blocks. And now, The RAW Cafe, an organic restaurant and juice bar, is set to join them at the corner of Woodward and Willis, on the same block as the Majestic Theatre Complex. Owner LaKeta McCauley says the choice to locate in the area was an easy one. "The synergy here is tremendous," she says. "This is a high-consciousness area."

The restaurant will offer vegan and raw foods, both sit-down and carryout. There will be an eclectic menu -- think raw pizza, pancakes made from ground almond, flaxseed and blueberries, pies and cheesecake. McCauley and her husband and co-owner Lee stress that healthy food does not mean sacrificing taste -- she says The RAW Cafe will help its patrons live "optimally and deliciously."

Construction is going full throttle, and the couple plans to open the restaurant by the end of the month. Hours to begin will be Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

McCauley teaches nutrition and health classes. She wrote a book, Taking Every Bite Seriously, that is available here, at Amazon, and will also be available at the restaurant, along with other recipe and health books.

To reach McCauley to schedule a health seminar or workshop, send her an email.
