City offers more support to businesses in Mexicantown's West Vernor district

The success of the Southwest Detroit Business Association's efforts in its area of West Vernor has been noticed. The advisory board of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood and Commercial Revitalization voted to expand its responsibilities eastward into the former Mexicantown Hubbard Communities Commercial District, now named the Mexicantown Business District.

Their purview now spans the entire length of West Vernor, from the city limits on the west to its terminus near the Michigan Central Station on the east as well as Bagley between 25th and 16th Streets.

Businesses in the district are eligible for technical assistance and matching facade grants for up to $15,000. Clean and safe initiatives and district promotions are also supported.

"SDBA is pleased to begin working with the businesses of Mexicantown to expand and revitalize their district," says president Kathy Wendler.

It is estimated that SDBA's work has resulted in over $100 million in leveraged improvements along the West Vernor corridor to date.
