Startup News: Wedit turns wedding videos into Internet startup

Wedding videos are one of the first things to go when young couples begin making hard decisions to balance their nuptial budget. TechTown-based Wedit believes it has come up with a solution so those who are about to tie the not can capture it on film without the hefty price.

"Most people don't get a video because of the price," says Brett deMarrais, CEO of Wedit.

Having a videographer film the event and edit the tape afterward often starts at $1,500, leaving many young couples happy to stick with just a photographer. Wedit whittles that base price down to $500 by mailing five HD flip cameras so people attending the wedding can capture it. The cameras come with a pre-packaged box the newly married couple can send back to Wedit, which will edit cameras and provide the final cut that can be mailed on a CD or posted on the Internet.

Wedit is doing a handful of test weddings this summer and plans to launch its website in September. DeMarrais hopes to have 500 weddings under his belt and six employees on his payroll within his first year.

The Royal Oak resident graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors degree in General Studies. He enrolled in Bizdom U later that fall and graduated from that entrepreneurial academy earlier this year.

"As a kid I always had a dream of being an entrepreneur and starting something from nothing," deMarrias says. "When I was in college I was aiming for a corporate job but then I saw Bizdom U and thought there is no better chance to do this than when I am young."
