SEED Wayne (Sustainable Food Systems Education and Engagement in Detroit) is kicking off a new farmers market on Wayne State University's campus. This year, it will be on the fourth Wednesday of the month in August and September -- that's the 27th and 24th -- from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in front of Prentis Hall.
Data from these first two market days will be used to determine the whens, wheres and whats of next year's operation, says Kami Pothukuchi, associate professor in WSU's Department of Geography and Urban Planning. "We're going to see if we should cut back or add farmers and we'll interview people to see if the location is OK for them," she says. "We're going to ask a lot of questions."
The farmers market is just one project of SEED -- others include the on-campus Warrior Demonstration Garden, in which students grow herbs
and vegetables used in dining hall meals, and cafeteria
composting. "We're really trying to be as comprehensive as we can," says Pothukuchi. "It's about 'from field to fork,' about getting students to think about what that means."
The target audience includes not only the WSU campus family -- students, faculty and staff -- but the greater Midtown community. Vendors will come from within the region, including the Vang Family Farm, Replenish the Earth, and
Avalon International Breads.
Prentis Hall is located at 5201 Cass Ave. For more information, visit
SEED's web site.
