News from W. Willis: Source Booksellers celebrates 20 years, Avalon to open Mondays

Source Booksellers is celebrating its 20th year of, well, bookselling in Detroit. Janet Jones spent 13 years lugging books to festivals, bazaars and the like, then set up shop at The Spiral Collective on Cass at W. Willis seven years ago for a total of two decades in the literature biz. Her corner of the collective retail space is filled with nonfiction books of many stripes, with a particular focus on health and well-bring, history and culture, books by and about women and the metaphysical. Within those categories is room for biographies, art and design, sustainability and finance along with related items such as greeting cards, soaps and incense.

Jones thrills to turning customers onto new books. And she learns things from her customers, too. "People give me a lot of energy," she says.

The celebration includes a 20th Anniversary party from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25. Plus, a special 20-year anniversary edition of the famous Moleskin pocket notebook has been created for Source is now available, and there will be at least one event a month -- think prize drawings and sales -- for the entire year to come.

Source is at 4201 Cass Ave. Hours are Monday 1:30 to 6 on Monday;  Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 313-832-1155.

Just down the block, local fave Avalon International Breads has caved to the demands of the masses and will be open now on Mondays starting on Sep. 14 -- and cups of joe will be only 99 cents on that day of the week.

Avalon's hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. It is located at 422 W. Willis; call 313-832-0008.
