Colin Hubbell ride June 19 takes you through Detroit by bike for good cause

This year's Colin Hubbell Bike Ride rolls through the city June 19. This is the second annual bike event to honor Hubbell, the late Midtown developer, and raise money for a fund that supports Detroit small businesses and entrepreneurs.

The12.5 mile route will start and finish at Traffic Jam & Snug, 511 W. Canfield, in Midtown. Bikers will ride through Wayne State, New Center, Woodbridge, Corktown, the RiverWalk, the Dequindre Cut and back through Eastern Market. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the ride starts at 10 a.m.

The registration fee is $20 for adult, $15 for kids 18 and under. To register or for more info, click here. The fee is the $25 the day of event. Participants will receive food, beverages and a decorative Colin Hubbell bandana.

Proceeds from registration will go the Colin Hubbell Fund, which is administered by the University Cultural Center Association. Model D is a sponsor of the event.

The fund was created in 2008 to carry on the legacy of native Detroiter and local developer Colin Hubbell. Hubbell was the founder and a partner in the Hubbell Group, which was responsible for The Art Center Town Homes, 55 West Canfield, and the Canfield Lofts. Hubbell also taught at the University of Detroit Mercy and served on several nonprofit community development boards.

Last year, the Colin Hubbell Memorial Fund awarded grants to Midtown businesses and community programs, including:

* Good Girls Go to Paris Creperie and Leopold's Bookstore, both located in the Park Shelton building, for signage on Woodward Avenue;
* North Cass Community Garden and Mariners Inn, for bike racks;
* Luella Hannan Foundation, for a sensory garden;
* The Hub of Detroit, for signage and facade improvement;
* And Detroit Cathedral Bookshop, for software.

Additionally, funding was awarded to support UCCA's Noel Night, as well as the Morningside Community's mural project.
