What happens in Detroit, doesn't stay in Detroit

It was clear, Freep columnist Rochelle Riley says, that though the Mackinac conference was meant to be regional, Detroit wasn't far from each thought and idea and discussion.

Excerpt from the Detroit Free Press:

Detroit was a highlight of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's comments on the opening day of the conference, the highlight of a gubernatorial debate that, after two hours, left Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra looking presidential and Democrat Lansing Mayor Virg "The Situation" Bernero looking ready for a fight.

The candidates focused on Detroit and its serious issues and talked, after being prompted, about whether they'd consider giving the city bailouts or loans. (Republican state Sen. Tom George said: "The check would bounce." Hoekstra rightly said he didn't have enough information to make that call.)

What became clear, though, during the panel discussions, conversations and keynote addresses, is that Detroit -- and Michigan -- must educate children for better futures and better prepare its populace for work.
