As Uniroyal cleanup goes forward, so goes extension of Detroit RiverWalk

Detroit Free Press business writer John Gallagher, whose book Reimagining Detroit, is published this month by Wayne State University Press, reports that the long-delayed cleanup of the old Uniroyal site on E. Jefferson near Belle Isle is moving forward. The cleanup will clear the way for the extension of the RiverWalk as well as the Bellview residential and retail project headed by former NFL star and native Detroiter Jerome Bettis and other project partners.

Detroit's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority this week approved agreements with three corporations for $15 million-$20 million to clean up the western half of the 40-acre site. Cleanup agreements also are expected soon for the eastern portion.

Mayor Dave Bing hailed the cleanup pacts.

"This is a historic agreement for the City of Detroit," he said in a statement Friday.
