Henry Ford Hospital launches Innovation Institute in New Center

Henry Ford Hospital's newly launched Innovation Institute promises to create one more center of entrepreneurial innovation focused on Detroit's emerging new economy.

The $12 million initiative is focused on helping shape the future of healthcare by developing medical innovations pioneered at the New Center-based hospital. The Innovation Institute at Henry Ford Hospital is made possible from a partnership between Henry Ford Medical Group, the College for Creative Studies, the Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems Program at Wayne State University and The Henry Ford.

"You really have to be proactive here," says Dr. Madhu Prasad, director of the Innovation Institute at Henry Ford Hospital and a senior staff surgeon for Henry Ford Health System. "Where is healthcare headed? What can we do?"

The Innovation Institute at Henry Ford Hospital will focus on a number of emerging sectors in the healthcare industry. Those include developing innovations in virtual breast biopsy, knifeless surgery and rapid diagnosis of viruses and cancers, among others.

"Business as usual cannot continue in the United States, and probably the rest of the world," Dr. Prasad says.
