DTE Energy's name to the growing list of corporations working to make electrical cars of all stripes available on the market. The downtown-based electrical utility is the newest member of the U.S. Department of Energy's FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership.
That means it, and
Southern California Edison, is making its expertise available to electric-car research. Specifically the type of research and development that is higher risk of profitability and not seen as competitive in the market place yet. That type of research is used in the development of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles.
The FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership is a public-private partnership formed in 2002. It includes the federal government, a number of oil companies and the Big Three.
DTE Energy has been involved in the electric vehicle programs since the 1980s. It still supports advanced vehicle technologies in its fleet, such as hybrids, bio-diesel and compressed natural gas.
