Detroit's education system
may take more than its fair share of knocks, but try telling that to the three
Wayne State University students who took home top prizes in the
Microsoft Imagine Cup in
Los Angeles.
Melissa and Jennifer Hui took first place in the digital
arts segment of the competition. The sisters and students in Wayne State
Biological Sciences program formed
Team Provisio, which created a photo essay that shows how technology is being
applied there to try to slow global warming and deforestation in rain forests.
The team won $5,000 and will have a two-page color spread published
in American Photography magazine.
Imagine Cup is one of the world’s premier student technology
competitions. It serves as a way to encourage the young to apply their
imagination, creativity and passion to technology innovations that can make a
difference in the world today.
“The Imagine Cup is all about igniting the imagination of
tomorrow’s technology visionaries and leaders, and inspiring them to harness
the possibilities of technology to build a better world,” said Dan’l Lewin,
corporate vice president of Strategic and Emerging Business Development at
Microsoft. “The contest provides student inventors and entrepreneurs with a
launch pad for their ideas and access to key resources that can set them on the
path to career success.”
But first the Hui sisters will see how far this project can
take them. By winning in Los Angeles they get to
compete in the Imagine Cup World Finals in Paris in July.
