Teens get high-tech hangout at main library branch

The Detroit Public Library has transformed its reading room into a high-tech hangout for teens called HYPE (Helping Young People Excel). Its goal is to "provide community youth a place to come, a refuge that is nice and progressive," says A.J. Funchess, DPL's assistant director of marketing. "It has all the bells and whistles -- when you walk in the door it lifts you up."

HYPE is filled with teen-oriented books as well as video games, flat screen televisions and a projection screen wall. It has private study rooms and Macintosh and Dell computers. Classes will be offered, including an introduction to digital media. "If kids are interested in playing video games, they can learn how to make it themselves," says Funchess. "We'll show you the educational component of it -- learning through play."

Librarians will be the only non-teens allowed into HYPE, creating a sanctuary for the youth. The staff be primed to offer career guidance. "We want to start really focusing on what they need to do to be successful in life," says Funchess.

Ultimately, DPL aims to establish HYPE's at multiple branches across the city. "Kids need a place to go," says Funchess. "This is just another way to keep them from getting into trouble and learn something in the process."

HYPE officially opens Thursday, May 15, but there are events happening this entire week to celebrate, including a dance party Friday night and an outdoor festival on Saturday. Find out details at HYPE's website.
