The
Institute for Professional and Executive Development will host a historic preservation conference on June 5 at the Detroit Athletic Club. The target audience is developers, lawyers, architects, accountants and those in the lending industry -- anyone interested in the "nuts and bolts" of how to finance the rehabilitation of historic buildings in Detroit, says seminar organizer David Schon.
Schon, a native Detroiter and Washington, D.C.-based attorney, says that historic tax credits are not just good for high profile projects like the Book Cadillac, but they are also integral to smaller projects. "They are a key piece of the puzzle to make these projects viable," he says.
The conference features numerous speakers who are experts in various aspects of the historic tax credit process -- tax, design, legal and historic. Anne Beck, the vice-president for administration and finance for the College for Creative Studies, will speak about the Argonaut Building; and Olga Savic from the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. will speak to that agency's role in moving projects forward. The State Historic Preservation Office, which must sign off on a project, will be represented, as will several banks that invest in historic tax credit projects.
There will be networking opportunities sprinkled throughout the day.
More information, including the agenda and a full list of speakers, can be found
here. Schon recommends pre-registration, as last year's event filled to capacity.
