Courtyard Marriott completes $5.7M in improvements, just $100,000 of work left to go

The Courtyard by Marriott Detroit Downtown has a lot going for it: a People Mover station, Sweet Lorraine's, a central location, downtown's largest indoor pool and a full-service fitness center.

In July, the property added to that list by completing over $1 million in improvements to two event spaces, the Skyline Room and the Cascade Ballroom. The eighth floor Skyline, with a capacity of 100, has an outdoor patio with skyline views, is surrounded by windows and has a fireplace.

The Cascade can accommodate 300 and is a more traditional interior banquet space that can be partitioned. Full meeting services, including AV, themed decorations and full-service catering are available in both.

The Courtyard completed a $4.3 million renovation of its 260 guest rooms and hallways in December 2005. The business traveler was a key focus. "Each room has a desk on wheels that can be moved and an ergonomic chair," says Kennedy.

Next up is a $100,000 renovation of the fitness center and pool that will start Nov. 1 and wrap up by year's-end. The Courtyard's fitness center offers outside memberships. It includes an aerobic room, free and fixed weights, a jogging track, a basketball court and full locker rooms with steam rooms and saunas.

When all is said and done, the renovations will add up to $5.8 million. "It will pretty much be a completely renovated hotel," says Kennedy.
