Mexicantown and Corktown promoting cultural tourism; Welcome Center and Mercado gain tenants

Mexicantown Community Development and Greater Corktown Development Corporation have begun collaborating on developing a cultural tourism plan for their neighborhoods. They hope to both grow the number of visitors and to enhance their experiences.

MCDC president Maria Elena Rodriguez says, “It just makes perfect sense.  Corktown is a historic, appealing, wonderful diverse neighborhood that sits right next to our neighborhood. We both have things that we take for granted that are so appealing to an outsider.”

Meanwhile, the number of tenants for the recently-completed Welcome Center and Mercado is increasing. At the Mercado, Mi Pueblo Tacqueria will open its second location and a coffee shop and four merchants have signed on as well.

DTE Energy has opened a customer service center in the Welcome Center and MCDC has relocated its offices there. The State of Michigan Welcome Center will be complete in time for a grand opening celebration on October 5.
