Downtown institution Niki’s Pizzeria reopens this week after a short closure for renovations. Photos of owner Dennis Kefallinos’ native Greece add to the sense that “you’re stepping into the countryside,” says Jodie Svagr of U&I Design, who works with Kefallinos.

The floor above the restaurant has been sub-divided into four rooms that can be rented for private parties and events. “We have stuff going on up there seven days a week,” says Svagr.

Niki’s opened in 1970 and its saganaki, pizza slices and homemade Greek salad dressing have emerged as Detroit staples. The restaurant’s pizza was recently hailed by hailed by GQ magazine writer Alan Richman as one of the nation’s 25 best. Parking for Niki’s is available at one of the many Greektown lots, or visitors can take the People Mover to the Bricktown Station. The pizzeria is directly across the street at 735 Beaubien. Hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Call 313-961-4303.
