The N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art to celebrate grand opening Oct. 9-10

The N'Namdi Center for Contemporary Art will kick-off its grand opening weekend with an all night party on October 9 that will run from 8 p.m. and will include gallery shows, live music, spoken word performances, a fashion show and performance art and will end with yoga at 6 a.m. The following day will feature artist lectures and book signings beginning at 2 p.m.

The art center, founded by N'Namdi Gallery owner George N'Namdi, includes 16,000 square feet of exhibition space, indoor and outdoor performance spaces, an outdoor sculpture garden and a movement/yoga center. Also coming to the center are independently run businesses: Seva, a vegetarian restaurant making its debut to the Detroit area; a gift and bookstore; a wine bar; and and two other art galleries.

Diane Jones, of Zachary and Associates, said a nearby outdoor walkway is also under construction, and will connect the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, 71 Garfield and the new art space while offering outdoor space for different events.

Jones says that N'Namdi is where people can view and purchase high-quality art, MOCAD offers viewing of more provocative art, and the 71 Garfield building is there for making art. "The vision for Sugar Hill is that this is an active arts area," she says. "We have a district that works together for people to come together and see a variety of artwork."

The center is at 52 E. Forest, in Midtown Detroit. Call 313-831-8700.
