Slow's To Go opens to the delight of hungry Midtowners

Have an out-of-town friend that hasn't been to Detroit in a while? Even she knows that the wait at Slow's Bar B Q in Corktown can be excruciating. Well, good news for anyone hankering for some pulled pork or mac-n-cheese that is more than happy to consume it at work or home: Slow's To Go has opened in Midtown.

Most Slow's menu items will be available for carry-out at the new location. There is a small inside area for sandwich noshing, and warmer months will see some picnic tables added outside. Behind the scenes, the ginormous kitchen (5,000-square feet as opposed to a mere 800 in the original spot) means that more catering gigs can be handled by the Slow's crew. "It's been hard to keep up with the demand," says co-owner Phillip Cooley.

Expanding Slow's to Midtown seemed natural, but finding the right location wasn't necessarily a simple task. "Obviously being in a walkable neighborhood is important for a carry-out business," says Cooley. "But we were shocked to find a realistic price on a building with so many people speculating, holding out."

Slow's To Go is located in a 6,000-square feet building at the northwest corner of Cass and Alexandrine. It was vacant for several years; past incarnations included a church, funeral home and Secretary of State office, evidenced by the scores of 1938 license plates the construction crew unearthed during renovations.

Approximately 40 people have been added to staff the new location. "Hopefully, we get really busy and we have to hire even more folks," says Cooley.

Slow's To Go is at 4107 Cass Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week. Call 877-SLOWS-2-GO (877-569-7246).
