Freshman Clothing uses BUILD program to relaunch

Phillip Simpson is leveraging D:hive's BUILD program to relaunch his clothing business, Freshman Clothing, a year after the young man closed it.

Simpson opened Freshman Detroit as a small clothing boutique in Harmonie Park in 2007. He closed the shop last year but didn't give up on his dream of owning a fashion business. He enrolled in the BUILD program earlier this year and plans to leverage it to open his business again, but this time as Freshman Clothing.

"It was awesome," Simpson says. "There were things I hadn't learned before and a whole lot of new information."

Simpson plans to reopen Freshman Clothing as primarily a menswear line online. He plans to open a pop-up shop in 2013. He is aiming for a return to downtown.

"I still want to be downtown," Simpson says. "That's where my heart is."
