"These Alebrijes are made from different car parts tying up our relationship with Detroit and our long-time contributions as a Latino community to the Motor City,” says artist Elton Monroy Durán.
Opening doors, bridging connections and walking entrepreneurs through the litany of permits, regulations, and licensing, Southwest Detroit Business Association supports small business owners in their quest to succeed.

"There are a lot of youth in Southwest Detroit that need leadership development," says Fabiola Venegas. "The space is like a second home to them. It helps them feel like, 'Yes, you can get an education after high school. Or, yes, you can do something outside for the community, like the garden."
For Southwest Detroit residents struggling with high rents, this new development offers new possibilities.
A long-vacant block along an otherwise bustling Vernor Highway will soon become site to La Joya Gardens, a mixed-use development featuring retail and residential space.
This initiative has awarded $546,500 in grants to developers of color in Detroit since 2021.
“The Southwest Greenway will make it really easy for residents of Mexicantown, Corktown and Southwest Detroit to get to the riverfront,” says Mark Wallace, president and CEO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.
While the "homeownership gap" remains a concern in Detroit, these area institutions are taking some out-of-the-box approaches to make buying a home more accessible.
