Canine to Five expands with outdoor dog park
Canine to Five: Detroit Dog Daycare will celebrate the grand opening of its outdoor dog park on August 11 at 9 am. The dog park adds an additional 7,500 square feet of outdoor play-space to an already expansive facility, and is Detroit’s first fully-fenced dog park.
Owner Liz Blondy says, “One thing that differentiates us from other dog parks is that we require proof of current vaccinations and we screen dogs for aggression. This gives people a sense of security that they are bringing their dog to a safe place.” Admission to the dog park is $5
per visit, $7 for two dogs and $75 for a 20-visit package. Blondy says, “We do charge money, but you get coffee and peace of mind!”
Because Blondy has been operating a dog park already, albeit in smaller quarters, she has seen how much dogs — and oftentimes, their owners — enjoy it. “People have become friends and formed relationships. I’ve heard people taking business. The dog park allows your dog to socialize and exercise, while you get to talk to people and have fun.”
The dog park will be open Tuesdays from 7 to 9:30 and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. “I would love to open it more hours, more days a week, but we need user feedback,” says Blondy. Facilities include some play equipment, seating for people, and “an endless supply of clean, cold water,” she says. Once nights get dark earlier, the area will be lit.
Blondy’s day care, boarding and grooming business is “doing really well,” she says. She estimates that 50% of her customers live in and around downtown and the rest are commuters.
