Ten organizations have been announced as recipients of $1,714,500 in grants from the Hudson-Webber Foundation.
The grants are intended for organizations working to help Detroiters through programs fostering economic and community development, safe and just neighborhoods, a better built environment, and more. The Detroit-based foundation grants approximately $7 million to such organizations each year.
"The foundation is proud to support neighborhood-serving organizations that are stewarding programs and projects that are responsive to community needs and concerns, and that deeply engage residents in creating a vision for improving neighborhood vitality and well-being," says Melanca Clark, president and CEO of Hudson-Webber Foundation.
This latest round features several organizations working toward more safe and just communities.
The Vera Institute of Justice received $94,500 to support a Wayne County jail usage study; the Detroit Justice Center received $125,000 to support legal services for Detroiters with justice-system contact; the Michigan Collaborative to End Incarceration received $200,000 to expand operational capacity in its mission to end mass incarceration at the state and local levels; and Jefferson East, Inc. received $330,000 to fund safety programs along its corridor, which runs from downtown to the eastern border of Detroit.
Additional organizations to receive grants include the Public Rights Project, Eastern Market Partnership, and Detroit Regional Partnership, in the Community and Economic Development category; Midtown Detroit, Inc. and United Community Housing Coalition in the Built Environment category; and, in the Policy and Research category, the Council of Michigan Foundations.
"We are also making investments in organizations that are not tied to particular a geography, but are engaged in the critical work of addressing structural barriers that impede progress for a vast majority of Detroiters," Clark says.
