One more puncture in the grocery myth: Downtown Foodland opens in Lafayette Park

There's yet another place to get Great Groceries in the D: Downtown Foodland has opened its doors at the Shops at Lafayette Plaza. The 10,000-square-foot store is still in the process of shelf-stocking, but the basics have arrived.

Owner Keith Tansil says specialty items -- like soy milk and gluten-free products -- will be ordered as he ascertains brands that his customers will prefer. "We've already gotten a positive response from the community and our ads aren't even out," he says. "Once the word gets out, it should really pick up."

Tansil has managed grocery stores in the Grandmont-Rosedale area since 1978 -- first at Kroger's, then Metro Foodland -- and is confident that the Greater Downtown area is a good place to invest. "There's a need for a grocery store in this area," he says. "I've been doing this for 30 years -- and this is a good spot to open a supermarket."

Downtown Foodland employs 40. Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The address is 1563 Lafayette.
