Model D TV: Bureau of Urban Living
Midtown’s Bureau of Urban Living is a destination for shoppers, but it could also be a piece of the retail puzzle that helps build real community in Detroit.
Claire Nelson and Francis Grunow recently opened the Bureau of Urban Living, a 600-square foot home accessories store at the Canfield Lofts. Grunow is a frequent contributor to Model D.
They hope the store’s location within walking distance of Wayne State University, four condo loft developments and popular spots such as the Avalon Bakery and Traffic Jam and Snug restaurant draws foot traffic and offers the neighborhood’s residents a place to find everyday items without having to leave the city.
“We would have to drive to the suburbs to buy bath towels or wine glasses or a modern housewarming gift for a friend,” Nelson said. “We want Bureau to be a destination for people who’d rather shop locally and spend their dollars in the city.”
