Yes, Virginia, Detroit really has a grocery store

We at Buzz often read articles about our city authored by our national counterparts, always including the assertion that no grocery stores exist in the city of Detroit. This has led to some confusion. While shopping at E&L Supermercado, we often have to stop the cart and ask ourselves, “Are we purchasing chorizo in some other dimension? Is any of this really happening?”

Then along came Sweet Juniper’s Jim Griffoen, a blogger in possession of investigative skills not seen in modern journalism since the release of the Pentagon Papers, a truth-seeker determined to crack this seemingly unsolvable paradox. Aided by sophisticated technology known to the public as “Google Maps,” Griffoen discovered nearly a dozen grocery stores in the greater downtown area. Our only question is how the rest of the national media missed them.

I know the traditional media is suffering. Reporters are overworked
and underpaid. Scholars like Mr. Longworth, too, might not have the
research assistants they once enjoyed, but I would certainly expect
anyone who makes an unequivocal statement like Detroit “is a city of
nearly 1 million people without a supermarket” to at least have done a
4-second google search to confirm it (six seconds, I guess, if google
isn’t your homepage).
