"As the only city chosen in the western hemisphere, Detroit represents over one hundred years of world-renowned innovations in transportation,” says Tim Slusser, Chief of the City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation.
“The great thing about this is that it gives access to shares to investors that may not have the means to make larger investments,” says Dayne Bartscht, co-founder and managing partner of Eastern Market Brewing Co. “The minimum investment for us is $500, which is still a lot of money to a lot of people, but it gives an opportunity for someone who believes in us to make a smaller investment and hopefully we'll be able to repay that many times over.”
Detroit-born Khalid el-Hakim’s mobile museum has evolved into one of the biggest collections of African American history and artifacts in the country. Now the pioneer in Black Museum Studies is touring Michigan, from Bloomfield Hills to Beaver Island.
“This festival is special to Detroit but there’s a real resurgence in letterpress, and especially among young people working in graphic design who are getting tired of staring at computer screens,” says Lynne Avadenka. “There are similar fests across the U.S. but we wanted to bring something special like this to Detroit.”
“The music community is vital to who we are as a city,” says Nique Love Rhodes, co-founder of D.Cipher. It's one of the reasons the organization is hosting a free street festival that will raise funds for Detroit music projects.
“We estimate that this project keeps 1.5 million gallons of stormwater out of the system in an average year,” says Valerie Strassberg, Detroit Urban Conservation Director at The Nature Conservancy.
Among the lessons learned were how to trim costs without sacrificing quality, ways to reinvent menus for carryout, and the willingness of customers to dine outdoors — a trend that’s likely to stick around.

Efforts to grow Eastern Market while still retaining its food industry roots took another step forward last week as the Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded the City of Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority a $75,000 site readiness grant as part of the Michigan Build Ready Sites program.
