D-Biz: Tune-ups and cycles galore at Eastside's Bike Tech
Tuesday, January 29, 2008

As in many retail markets, Detroit is woefully under-served by bike shops, so E. Warren's Bike Tech is pretty refreshing. It has sold and serviced bikes from its Eastside location since 1984 and, from the looks of it, is staying quite put for years to come.
Owner Brian Pikielek decided to open the shop when he saw the "For Rent" sign in the window while riding his bike home from work. He started the business carrying primarily road bikes but has evolved his product line as mountain bikes, hybrids and comfort bikes have become more popular. Interestingly, he is starting to see a resurgence in the popularity of road bikes.
The shop also carries accessories and used bikes. "It's not a majority of our business," says Pikielek. "But there's people coming in that 300 or 400 bucks is too much for a new bike, but they can get a used bike in good shape for getting around."
Pikielek prizes his location and enjoys his work. "I've been really happy with my location: the visibility of the shop, the fact that it is next to a park and not buried in some strip mall somewhere," he says. "I love what I do -- it's a lot of fun coming to work every day."
Bike Tech is located at 18401 E Warren Ave. and can be reached at 313-884-2453. The store's winter hours are 10 a.m. through p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
