Chelios serves up chili next to Comerica Park

Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios has opened a second location of his Cheli’s Chili Bar at 47 E. Adams, at Grand Circus Park and a slapshot away from Comerica Park and Ford Field.

The 6,000-square-foot chili bar, housed in the 1880s Tudor-style Women’s Exchange Building, covers two stories, with the capacity to hold about 450 patrons. It also has a private mezzanine level exclusively reserved for Chelios and his friends.

Catering to sports lovers, Cheli’s will display 38 42-inch plasma TVs. When the Red Wings are playing all TVs will be tuned in, but on any other day you can have any of the TVs turned to the sporting event of your choice. “We are very accommodating,” says Megan Soroka, opening manager for Cheli’s.

The chili served at Cheli’s comes from Chelios’ original family recipe and will be served several ways, including 3-way and 4-way with many hot sauces and sides to choose from. Other favorites include the baby back ribs and house nachos.

They hope to add a rooftop patio by summer. The third floor will be used for office and residential space.

During the day Cheli’s will be family oriented, but after 9 p.m. no one under the age of 21 will be permitted. Currently, Cheli’s is only open for drinks. Hours are from 5 p.m. till 2 a.m. Plans are to open the kitchen this week, and the regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from noon till 2 a.m.
