Heidelberg Project opens studio, office, meeting space in Brush Park

Artist Tyree Guyton's Heidelberg Project, the ever-evolving art environment on Detroit's Eastside, has spread its wings: it has expanded operations to include a building in Brush Park, 42 Watson, that houses administrative, meeting, gallery and studio space.

Long-term goals for the Heidelberg Project include the construction of The House That Makes Sense Center on Heidelberg Street at Ellery. Currently under design by University of Michigan's School of Architecture, the structure will house an outdoor gallery, offices, store, cafe and a space for visiting artists-in-residence. "We want to take the Heidelberg Project to the next level ... while still keeping it raw, funky and real," says executive director Jennene Whitfield. She says the project will increase the neighborhood's functionality, employ area residents and capture tourism dollars.

Upon the completion of The House That Makes Sense Center, Heidelberg Project administrative functions will relocate there, but Guyton's studio and gallery space will remain at 42 Watson. Currently, the gallery exhibits work from Guyton and his grandfather and mentor Sam Mackey, as well as photographs of the Heidelberg Project.

The 4,500-square-foot space is available for small events, meetings and artist showcases. "It's multi-purpose," says Whitfield. "We want to lend it out, let people see it and make some money from it." Up to 40 can be seated in auditorium-style seating or at tables and chairs, and up to 100 can be accommodated for a party.

With the multitude of changes that the Heidelberg Project has undergone in its almost 25 years of existence, it's always remained true to its roots, says Whitfield. "It's been many things, but it's always definitely been Detroit."
