Honey Bee Market/La Colmena triples size in Mexicantown

Mexicantown’s Honey Bee Market/La Colmena’s newly expanded retail space is open for business. The 50-year-old corner grocery has transformed into a large, modern supermercado.

With square-footage increased almost by three-times, there’s room for more of everything. The newly constructed retail space of 8,000-square-feet is adjacent to the original location and includes a large frozen foods section, greatly expanded fresh meats, fish and deli counter and large produce section.

Ken Koehler, who owns the store with his wife, Tammy Alfaro-Koehler, says they have hired 15 new full and part-time employees. A grand opening is scheduled for Sunday, August 13 and will feature pony rides, dancers, a mariachi band and lots of free-food. Festivities begin at noon.

The Honey Bee Market/La Colmena is located at 18th and Bagley and is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new kitchen also serves prepared hot tacos and burritos Monday through Friday.
