New coffee shop jazzes up Harmonie Park

Downtown caffeine junkies have a new spot to get their fix: the Espresso Jazzy Cafe, located on E. Grand River between Broadway and Center Street and featuring free Wi-Fi. Proprietor Michael Thacker has opened a charming and cozy storefront coffee shop with large windows that take in views of the Boll Family YMCA and the new Opera House Parking Center.

Thacker says his reception to the neighborhood has been warm, counting the architects at Hamilton Anderson, employees from Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Mezzanine's Joe Posch among his already-regular customers.

Right now there is a menu of traditional coffee drinks (note: a plain old cup of joe will set you back just $1.50), muffins and lemon pound cake, but that will be expanding to include sandwiches, subs, bagels, biscotti and scones.

Hours are Monday through Wednesday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. until "whenever," says Thacker. He hopes to stay open later, but says it will depend on building a regular evening clientele. Poetry readings will be held Thursday nights.
