Work on a two-story Albert Kahn building on Woodward Avenue at Erskine will wrap up shortly. The 32,000 square foot structure has been completely rehabilitated and will be used for commercial purposes.
Architect Larry Rockind of
Larry Michael Rockind Associates P.C. says his firm's intent was simply to return the building to its original 1912 appearance. He says, "when you're working on a building done by a world-famous person, you don't really want to screw the building up for future generations." They were unable to locate any photographs or drawings of the building prior to the widening of Woodward, when part of the building was demolished and an art deco façade was added, so they were forced to guess at details like colors.
Rockind is excited about what has happened to the Midtown area since work began on the building. "We started in 2005, and I found the area to be somewhat intimidating. [Since then,] the city has put in new sidewalks, new lighting, street paving -- it's very exciting. I tell people this is the one example where the Superbowl worked. It kick-started something. Now, people are jogging and walking in what was really a no-man's land."
Rockind says that anyone interested in leasing space in the building should contact the project's developer, Adam Nyman of Professional Property Management. Call 248-649-6320.
