The Lafayette Park neighborhood is celebrating the 50 year anniversary of its groundbreaking with a series of events intended to spotlight its “diversity, stability, [and] architecture,” says Joanne Givens, the co-chair of the PR and fundraising committee of LP50, the community-based organization working to commemorate the occasion. Largely believed to be the most successful urban redevelopment project in Detroit, Lafayette Park also includes the largest collection of buildings designed by famed modernist architect Mies van de Rohe in the nation.
The anniversary events include a Sept. 9 community walk, and a picnic on Sept. 16. The picnic runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and events include a baseball game between police officers and firefighters, an appearance from Bozo the Clown, the Charles Prophet Jazz Band, Mosaic Singers, DJ Kevin Johnson and a 10 a.m. dog parade sponsored by Canine to Five.
“It is my hope that the planning and celebration of events in this anniversary year will serve as a catalyst to organize and energize residents to envision our community's next 50 years of beauty, diversity and stability," says Constance Bodurow, one of the organizers.
