Mid-Med Lofts in Midtown starts construction

Construction began last week on the 37-unit four-story former Melrose Hospital at 103 E. Canfield, which is being completely gutted and renovated into Mid-Med Lofts. The development also will house ground-floor retail including a 7-11 Plus and Midtown Corner Café, a deli slated to open in mid-March.

Canfield east of Woodward has seen lots of development over the last several years, but East Canfield is starting to get some of the action. “The location is great for Detroit Medical Center people — the backyard is Harper Hospital— and it’s just a block and a half from Wayne State University,” says Renee Bommarito, sales agent for Mid-Med Lofts.

A furnished model trailer on-site, has helped sell 14 of the units—including the entire fourth floor. Remaining condos range in size from 818 to 1,753 square feet and are priced from $171,000 to $389,000.

“A lot of the people who have come down to check out the lofts are either parents of kids who go to Wayne, DMC people and the staff from Wayne. They want to be close to work or school," she says.

The model is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment. Purchasers will be able to move into their loft by December, she says. Each loft comes standard with wood floors, granite counters and stainless steel appliances in the kitchens, and separate tub/shower and double vanity sinks in the bathrooms.

The project’s developer, J. P. Peabody, has secured Neighborhood Enterprise Zone property tax abatements for the lofts.
