
The newly rehabbed Odd Fellows Hall on W. Vernor in Southwest Detroit has found a unique tenant, COMPĂS -- the Center of Music and Performing Arts Southwest.
COMPAS is a program of
Southwest Detroit Business Association, the organization responsible for the rehabilitation of Odd Fellows. It a collaboration of five unique arts groups: Mosaic Youth Theatre, Heritage Works, Living Arts, La Chispa and Company and the Goboldo Institute. Each group brings a unique skill set to to the project, including Flamenco and Cuban dance, African drumming and singing. Thre are over 250 regular students and approximately 700 kids have particpated in COMPAS' after-school program
There are two upcoming events to take note of at COMPAS. First up, The Southwest Artists Network of Detroit (SWAN) is hosting an open
house on Saturday, March 7 from 3 to 8 p.m. at COMPAS. The event is
free, open to the public and will include an art show of local visual
artists as well as live music.
The following week, on March 14 from 7 to 10 p.m., is Cafe Violetta, a monthly event that showcases a particular form of dance. This installment celebrates Flamenco -- as well as Spanish food. Violetta always takes place on the second Saturday of the month.
